| Dave strives to simplify the world and distill its shapes, colors and patterns into graphical elements that have a more timeless and serene impact on the viewer. The sky, earth, water, rocks and trees become textures and monochromatic elements that show us what we too often pass by or simply take for granted. Thus the choice of the black and white medium serves to create an image that is more magical and perhaps even lyrical, drawing the viewer in and imparting a message that has a sensory hold on the memory. In the early morning, at midday or late in the afternoon, the light shifts and slants and reveals the land and the forms on it. In a canyon, the light reveals one wall and shrouds the other in shadow. And among the trees in a forest, the shadows dominate so that a shaft of light becomes a rare and fleeting presence, dancing and disappearing.
| N | This is the world that he chooses to capture on film. In his images he purposely defines the edges, renders the dark areas with just enough detail and create highlights that set off these darker tones in order to create a luminous effect. Rather than trying to inform or teach something about the world, Dave wants his images to invite the viewer to look and behold a small part of the world that might otherwise have been overlooked. | |
